Vadim Playing Ultimate

Ultimate Frisbee is a wonderful sport that combines the best elements of soccer, American football, and a 175 gram piece of plastic into an exciting past-time. It is played by two teams of up to 7 players on a field layed out similar to a football field. The object is for one of your team members to catch a frisbee in the end zone for a score. What makes it challenging is that you may not move when you have the frisbee, and have 10 seconds to throw it. If it hits the ground or a member of the opposing team catches it, the opposite team tries to score in similar fashion. For more general information on ultimate frisbee, check out the Ultimate Players Association, of which I've been a member since 1997.

I was introduced to ultimate by Greg Rogers (thanks Greg!) in 1995 and have been enthusiastically playing it since. I used to to play at the Cupertino library game while working in Cupertino. Now that I'm in Palo Alto, I play at the Greer Park lunch time game, and the Peers Park Saturday game. I also play fairly regularly at the South Bay Ultimate League (played since 1996), and sometimes play and help organize Northern California Ultimate League tournaments. Another fun annual tourney is the Hats, Hops and Hucks in Boulder Creek. I only managed to go in 1997, and to my amazement, my team won the tournament despite my best efforts to the contrary. No such luck at my second appearance in 2000. 2000 was also my first season in the San Francisco Ultimate League where I played with Cocoa Pebbles, finishing 2nd.

There are several lists of pick-up games in the Bay Area. Mine is by no means definitive, but it's a starting point.

Things get pretty serious at times. There are annual playoffs - in 1997 I played in the co-ed playoffs with Huck'N'Pray, and we actually won the division II tournament! The team was not able to go to the next round, so the spot was given to the #2 team. I played with the Davis Ticks in the next round and got thoroughly trounced. In 1998, the Greer Park crew put together a team called Podesta. Though this was our first tournament, we managed to win a game on day 2, and played close in several others.

All that play, and I still don't have a decent throw to show for it. If you would like to come out and play, contact me as the games are always looking for more players. Hope to see you out there!
